A few weeks ago, R noticed something flying around in our lab – a bug. Of course, we don’t have bugs around here, so we found a jar and caught it. The bug was quickly determined to be a small moth, named Dustin, and put on display in the galley.
Apparently, Dustin had hatched out of some of the fresh food that was brought down on the last herc flight about a month previous. We fed him apple juice, put a little cover over his jar at nighttime, and generally enjoyed having a pet on station.
After a week or so, Dustin clearly wasn’t doing too well, moths don’t seem to live long after all, and we moved him into a hospice jar. Around the same time, I ended up with the sad task of making a coffin. Dustin is no longer with us.
We haven’t quite got the plans firmed up yet, but there will be a funeral at S Pole, sometime in the next few days.
